Caroline is a Labrador mix. She made the journey from Louisiana to North Carolina and arrived a thin, scared, and shy puppy. Over the past 1.5 months, she is has come out of her shell and is a very loving, cuddly, and silly girl. She is first a cuddle bug, thus the nickname Caroline the Cuddle Bug or Bug for short. She will gladly lay on your lap while you watch tv but knows not to jump up on the couch without an invitation. There are moments when she needs extra hugs and during those moments she will come and put her head on your lap if you’re sitting on the couch and I usually will give her “mama hugs” to fill her up. She loves it.
She is a picky eater (we tried 11 types of puppy food before we found a winning combination) and will drink water uncontrollably (so you will have to ration her) even though she is negative for diabetes and negative for UTI.  She sleeps very well in her crate at night and even during the day for nap times. She rarely barks unless someone is approaching the door…then she will let out a little woof but not uncontrollable barking so we think she will be a good guard dog. She is house trained and will only have an accident if she is allowed to drink uncontrollably or isn’t regularly taken out.
We have begun her training (she’s water motivated) and she knows “Sit”, “Here”, “Room” – go to crate, “No” or “No ma’am”, and “Inside”. She is working on “place” with an elevated dog bed and “Heel”. She will pull on a leash unless you use a no-pull harness or gentle lead. She is getting better at walking without pulling gradually. We think she will be a great hiking dog. We in the process of training her not to jump on people. We have trained her to be aware of and honors house boundaries (we don’t let her in the area with the stove or in bedrooms with carpet).
She gets along well with our permanent pup (corgi) and our neighbor’s dog (large mixed breed), but she hasn’t been around cats yet so we aren’t sure about how she will get along with them. She doesn’t seem to like children under the age of 10 years old and will growl or bark at them. She doesn’t like large groups of people or dogs or loud noises to include cars and busy streets; she will get scared. Fireworks don’t seem to faze her. She enjoys walks during the day but if a person walks by she will get scared and try to run away. She does not enjoy walks at night, she gets scared and would rather just potty and go back home.
She gets car sick! She can only last about 25 minutes in the car before she will puke. It happens every time so be prepared. She does well at the groomer and will let you handle her paws and brush her teeth. She absolutely loves bully sticks and antlers to keep busy in her crate.
Overall, she is a loving, sweet, smart, beautiful pup and would be a great companion. Don’t miss out on these puppy days, she’s growing fast.
