Say hello to SKY!  Reposting his bio is **2 years* in the making.

Sky came to us out of Craven County, part of a 100 animal confiscation due to neglect/abuse. He is extremely shy and petrified and we were giving him the time and space he needs to decompress from 3 months of shelter life and no medical care.  He was heartworm positive but after his last exam he was given a clean bill of health!

When we took in Sky, he would not leave his crate.  We would place 1 pee pad outside of it where he would sneak out to eliminate under the cover of night, once a day.  That was his life and it was so sad.

Over two years later we now have a dog that while still shy, will use the doggie door, come out of his lair for treats, will walk across the room between sitting 'places', will sometimes play with other dogs, will chew up balls of paper for 'fun'; will actually bark to greet you; and will run like the devil back and forth outside in total unhinged glee.

He is scared of people still, but if you sit on the floor with him, he will lick your hands and accept rubs.  He even lets you sit with him and snuggle on the couch!  His foster mom has spent hours on the floor reading, texting, and browsing the web with Sky.

Even with all of this progress, there are some limits with Sky that we are not sure he can overcome.   He is beautiful and sweet, but please consider the following:

  • He is TERRIFIED of a leash. He is near-impossible to harness or collar.  Transport to the vet must be done by crate.  A very bad person scarred him badly.
  • Sky cannot be picked up.  He will thrash and flail and if you are lucky, he runs away while leaving a trail of fear behind him (the #1 and #2 kind)
  • He must have a fenced yard
  • He must have a doggie door or a door that he can learn to go through to get to a fenced yard to eliminate.  Otherwise, he reverts to his pee-pad ways.
  • He loves other dogs and must have a companion to relate to
  • He loves cheese crackers and will do almost anything for them

While he has learned a lot of confidence in his foster home, any move to a new home will be tough for him at first.  He spends his life now mostly underneath either a built-in kitchen bench or on a couch, both of which makes him feel safe.  When people go to bed, Sky will run around the downstairs exploring.

But all of this said, he has beautiful, soulful eyes and truly does want affection.  He particularly loves young ladies.

Might he be the right match for you?
