What a difference a couple weeks makes.  Kapers is one of the puppy mill dogs recently saved.  She is very sweet and has come out of her shell quickly.  She has learned what toys are and how to play chase.  She will wrestle with her pals and loves to be in the thick of all activities.  Playing soccer is one of her favorite games.  Kapers is so very excited to see everyone and dances at your feet until you pick her up.  She will sit in your lap completely relaxed now and is free with giving kisses.  Kapers has learned to trust!!  We are thrilled with how much she has changed in such a short period of time.

Kapers will most probably do best in a home without young children.  She is small and still learning the sounds of our world.  Too much commotion could be overwhelming.  She loves other dogs, in fact she's pretty puppy like herself, and cats too.

Kapers is not potty trained.  That will take patience and effort on the part of her new parents.  Her life prior to now has been in a wire cage.  No pee pads or blankets, just a wire cage.  They all had to use the bathroom where they slept and ate and lived.  Period.  If you are an impatient person, please do not apply for any of the puppy mill dogs.  They need love and understanding and a willingness to show them what kindness is, no matter the frustrations.  Keep in mind though, poodles are smart and Kapers is no exception to that rule.

Kapers recently developed a salivary gland blockage.  The surgeon treating her says this can happen if a dog does something as simple as bite their tongue.  Swelling is typically immediate as the gland fills with saliva but it is not a health concern that will impact her down the road if treated.  At his suggestion, Kapers is currently on medication to see if that will resolve the blockage and the gland will resume it's normal function.  If not, she will need to have the gland removed, which we will do.  As dogs have many salivary glands, removing the gland will not have any negative impact on her future health.

Finally, all of these dogs were rescued by HSUS.  The Humane Society will be notified of who their adoptive parents are and they may follow up with you.  There is always great interest when a puppy mill is busted and the public likes to know the fate of these dogs.  Please note that as an adopter, you may be asked to take part in interviews or a follow up feature article.
